Fiddle Hell reflection

Posted by Andah1andah2 on Monday, November 15, 2010

I wanted to tell folks about what a great experience Fiddle Hell was. I picked up a lot of new tunes and tips that will take me through months of practice. On Friday night there were some incredibly inspiring performances by several artists. Dave's sons are very talented and Andy's band was awesome. Dave of course is no slouch himself[:D] On Saturday, I spent most of the day sitting in on a southern jam with some great folks. There was a banjo/fiddler who was leading some great Kentucky tunes which I recorded for later. Terri (fiddlejammer) sat in for a while and really helped me out. I never tried to play anything in ADAE and very little in AEAE. I was able to get in on most tunes, if only to follow along with some basic notes. I was able to figure out some basic patterns that worked for a bunch of tunes.

Michael (Woodwiz) was there with a bunch of fiddles, bows and 5 string violas.  I never played a viola before and really liked that deeper sound.  Bonaparte's Retreat really hummed on it.  I played a really nice fiddle but Mudbug snatched it out from under my nose when I wasn't looking.  I think he said something like, "Hey look at that moose" when I turned back the fiddle was gone.
Michael had some real nice stuff there and although I didn't pick up anything this time, I'll be looking forward to seeing him next year.  Michael also taught a Missouri tune on Sunday and was very patient with all of us. I need some lengthy practice on that tune but I will get it down.  Thanks so much Michael.

Saturday night was the big fiddle hell.  It was very cool to play tunes with so many folks.  The individual playing was fun to watch.  I was impressed with the talent that was in the room.  Also, very impressed with how respectful everyone was as Dave made it to every single person.  I don't know many forums where people would sit and patiently listen to 150? people play tunes for over 2 hours, but they did because everyone was so supportive of others and it was just so much fun to listen to the skill and variety of tunes.  I only wish that I was able to get through my tune but I froze up instead.  Strange because I dont seem to mind playing in jams.  I had the tune practiced and all but when the moment came, I got all nervous.  I need to find a way to overcome that.

I was also inspired by Dave's workshop on fiddling along with country tunes which was Sunday morning.  I really want to work on my chords and get in on some (sorry) bluegrass tunes.

Anyway, I met a lot of new friends and also got to meet up and jam with fellow fiddle hangouters which was a great time.  All in all a wonderful experience and I will be back next year.  Thanks Dave for organizing such a class act!
