Luke Abbott the author of Strum Machine is in the process of adding a walking baseline to his SM app. I had the chance to try it out a few days ago. My fiddlin stinks but that new walking baseline addition sure makes it fun to play along with.

Sounds good, Rich. Your fiddlin' doesn't stink, by the way...nice fiddlin' on that and the strum machine sounds like it just gets to be more fun all the time.

I meant to ask...where'd you hear that tune?

Pretty sure it was written by Greg Canote. He has brother name Jerry and they ive up in the Puget Sound region. Those two have written a bunch of OT sounding tunes, separately and together. OMTTW has always been one of my all time favs.  Greg plays a lot in Calico. This one is in dropped Calico or FCFA.

Although its based on the Marcus Martin tune of that name, I think the term "Calico" to refer to that tuning may have originated with the Canotes, or at least they popularized it (or somebody up there did). I think anybody I've ever known would just call that tuning "Black Mountain Rag," and that would probably be the only tune they would think to play that way.

Well...I've heard of gettin' (name that president...whoever is president at the time) upstairs...similar-sounding title...and I can't remember how that tune goes, but I was thinking it was different. Anyway, sounds cool...neat tune.

My wish list:
1. add some variation the upright bass part, also walks, octave changes and better tone
2. add mandolin chops track
3. add occasional upstrokes and the bluegrass tag lick to the guitar part

BTW if I could I would have posted this on the SM forum but you have to be a paying member, it drives my crazy after about a minute because I don't hear the typical backup cliches as noted above.

At least the mandolin chop could be done easily ha ha

Strum Machine developer here! Rich sent me a link to this post. First, just to be clear, this feature is not publicly available yet, although I should be starting a public beta for it in about a week, which I'll announce on the Strum Machine forum. Still a few rough edges to iron out, though.

To respond to @mmuussiiccaall's y wish list:

1. Upright bass variation, walks, octave changes, and better tone: all on the roadmap! I've been focused on re-recording and improving the guitar – which sounds massively better than it did a year ago – and haven't gotten around to upgrading the bass part but that will be happening later this year, hopefully. (I'll be able to reuse a lot of the code I worked on for these guitar bass runs, actually.)

2. Mandolin chops track: it's included by default, actually! Rich just chose to turn it off. More mandolin options are also coming in the future, but for now there's just a basic chop.

3. Occasional guitar upstrokes and the bluegrass tag lick: while Rich opted for the simple boom-chuck rhythm, many guitar strumming patterns with upstrokes are also available. No "G runs" yet, but again, this work on bass runs is paving the way for that to happen in the future. (The trickiest part will be developing a way to either have the user specify where to put them or figure it out automatically.)

The Strum Machine forum is meant for users of the product only, but technically you can post without paying by simply starting a free trial. You can also always write to me directly in the app. ??

Thanks for chiming in Luke and elaborating on all the stuff currently available and planned for SM. Yeah, my recordings tend to favor the more stripped down and basic strumming patterns which. to my ear anyway, seem to work better with the OT tunes I enjoy playing. But, as Luke mentioned, there sure are a ton o ways to embellish SM to your hearts content.

Thanks for the reply Luke, it looks like you are on it! I doubt if this will help you in any way but I'll put it up here, Twenty years ago I started to need a backup band when I was traveling abroad playing for a traveling ministry. There was no money available to pay for more band members to I had to come up with something. What I discovered was the Roland arranger keyboards which came preloaded with the usual Casio, Yamaha, etc. tracks to play along with. I quickly became bored with the canned backups and started programming my own which I found I could make sound just like the original recording of the song in question. I had a button for looping the intro, verse, chorus, interlude, ending, and whatever else I needed. Then again I got bored and decided I needed to vary the arrangement so suit the mood of the room at any one time. I decided to use the left hand recognition of the M, m, 7th chords in a way that different than standard procedure. The solution I came up with was to make it where a major chord in the left hand was played the full out "band" was doing their thing. Next when I played a minor chord things calmed down to a moderate level of instrumentation and finally if I played a 7th chord the band went into a just keep it going mode. No M, m, 7th backups but still hearing the section of the song arrangement in different dynamics. Also since I had 8 tracks available I always put the instruments that were expendable in the same 3 tracks so i could program a foot volume pedal to back them down or out for a seemingly endless mix of instrumentation. BTW I could get me, my wife on a moped with my "band" tied to to the back and we were set, ha, ha. I don't know if this is anything like writing to code but maybe it might help in some way in your endeavors. I know I spent hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours in my search for satisfaction.

Wow @mmuussiiccaall, sounds like you were very industrious with your keyboard back in the day! There's definitely overlap with what I'm trying to do with Strum Machine, especially when it comes to varying accompaniment during the song which is an oft-requested feature that I'm still figuring out how to implement. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thanks for posting this, I like listening, sounds good!

I wondered what the Obama tune sounds like :-)
